A big thank you to the wonderful people at Penguin Group (USA)/Viking, for sending us an advance copy of the newest book by "Talking Heads" co-founder, and Academy Award winner, David Byrne. "Bicycle Diaries" is David Byrne's seventh book; journaling almost 30 years of travels around the world, all from the vantage point of the seat of a bicycle.
This is not your typical travel guide. Byrne, a self-professed bike-riding "addict", takes us on a journey through the back roads and off the main "concrete arteries"; giving us a snapshot of city life that we might otherwise not see.
My favorite section is Byrne's travels through Australia, and his mention of several invasive animal species , introduced by man, and their impact on Australia's ecosystem. Just one small example of how human beings have wreaked havoc on the environment with a few well-intentioned, yet selfish acts. We could all stand to learn from this, and pause and think before we act.
Bike riding has always been a favorite hobby of mine, and I honestly don't do it enough anymore. Like Byrne demonstrates, sometimes it's quicker and easier to get from Point A to Point B, when on a bike. We should all consider this inexpensive, emission-free, and healthy means of transportation whenever possible, and to slow down, take in the sights, and enjoy the ride :)
"Bicycle Diaries" is published by Viking, and due to be released on September 21, 2009. Amazon.com is offering pre-orders, in print, and for the Kindle, and an earlier release on September 17, 2009. Click to order your copy of Bicycle Diaries
