We've joined an organic produce buying club!

This post was first written in 2009. Our family's position on this club has since changed, and we have rescinded our membership.  Please see our updated post.

Many thanks to Annie, a fellow Florida Keys mom, for understanding the importance of having affordable, organic produce. She took matters into her own hands, and we now have Annie's Organic Produce Buying Club of South Florida.

Annie is such a sweetheart, and added our family to this coming week's pickup, on short notice. We are very much looking forward to a bountiful box of farm-fresh goodies. For $45, a box of over thirty pounds of organic produce is truly a bargain. There's also no way we could ever get such freshness and variety in our local stores. Annie has a few customizable options, and we added on the extra fruit share for $10. This is what we can expect to pick up this week:

• Asparagus
• Broccoli
• FL Eggplant
• FL Collards
• Sweet Red Bell Peppers
• Celery
• FL Tomatoes
• Scallions
• Cilantro
• FL Romaine Lettuce
• Avocados
• Blood Oranges
• Bananas
• FL Blueberries
• FL Cantaloupe or Golden Pineapple

Fruit Shares: Raspberries, Pineapple and/or Ataulfo Mangos

We're going to to be in for some really good eats :)

  1. UPDATE:

It's been a few months since we joined the buying club, and we love it even more now than ever!

We could visibly see the results of the fast-growing membership. Pretty soon, our family of three was having trouble keeping up with our weekly full share. Annie kindly accommodated us, and we switched to two full shares a month, and picked up a double fruit share (the $20 share) every other week, to keep some fruit in the house at all times. That was working out great.

If things couldn't get any better, Annie recently surveyed the members, and the results showed an interest in full-share boxes with more fruit, and less leafy greens. Annie made it happen! There's now the $45 "Fruity Booty" box available! It looks so great, that I think we're going to have to go back to weekly pickups of that box! I was chatting with one of my friends, and fellow member, yesterday, and she said she thinks she's going to do the same!

We're also in love with the Happy Hen organic brown eggs. We regularly went through two dozen of Eggland's Best, prior to joining the buying club. Now we have a standing order every week for two dozen from Happy Hen. And we are surely happy for it :)
